It's been almost two years since I won a blog contests. The ones I remember were:

* Daphne's Kor Aura Bottle which I received last July 20, 2011 and I'm extremely enjoying using it even my youngest sister agrees with me.

* KikayKendz's Elf Eyeshadow Palette Giveaway which I received last August 2011. I won myself  the Elf Bright Eye Edition Palette.

And then after being jinx of not winning anything, the spell was broken! I am so happy to know that I am one of the winners for the Guess Cutesy Patootie’s Gender Raffle Contest by Kerslyn who happens to be a blogger friend of mine. We haven't met personally but hopefully soon we will. My hunch was right that soon she will be having a baby girl! My feminine instinct is still working. Hehehehe.
Excited to see my name as one of the raffle draw winners!
I know you've been dying to know what I won from this contest right?

Thank you Project Happiness for the contest and the raffle prizes!

Throwback Thursday on Technology

I won't be posting any embarrassing pictures of myself probably in the future but not today. As the title of this post implies it's blast from the past  with the technology we have back then.

The social media eon years ago....
We are in the 21st century living a fast-paced life thus technology evolves tremendously. Proof are the things we used in our daily lives and the ways we connect to different people across the globe.

One of my favorite quotes that I always say or probably mentioned a lot of times in my blog - Change is the only thing that is constant in this world. Question is, should we hold back or go with the flow?

STD

What comes to your mind when you hear these three letters? I'm sure you'll be thinking about a disease(s) being transferred from one person to another through *ex but I'm actually thinking of another STD that surprisingly not many is aware of.

According to Wikipedia STD or Save the Date- "is a notice stating the date of a significant event such as a wedding. It is typically sent to those likely to be interested or affected by the event and states the planned date of the occasion so that recipients who wish to attend know to keep that date free.

For weddings, save the dates usually take the form of a card. They are generally sent out at least six to twelve months before the wedding date, and are usually followed by a formal wedding invitation. While save the date started as a wedding-related custom, it is now used by individuals, businesses, and organizations to announce the date of any formal event."

In a traditional Filipino wedding STDs are not practiced but over the years as technologies evolved so are the ways on how to send across the message to your friends or loved ones about special events in your life like weddings. STDs are widely used in weddings compared to other events/ celebrations in a person's life. I've never encountered a person getting a STD card for a birthday since normally it's an invitation you will get.

I remember my own Save the Date which I personally designed and turned it into ref magnet but sadly I don't have that magnet of my own to remember me by. I'm pretty sure that I saved one for self-keeping but I have misplaced it. But, I can still create one since I found this in my yahoo email:
A copy of my Save the Date which I designed/created using GIMP
When I created my Save the Date ref magnets I remembered going to a photo printing shop and have this printed in photo paper for 30-50 pieces then afterwards I cut each one of them and taped them securely in a magnet sheet. Using a cutter, I diligently cut out the ref magnets and voila! Instant Save the Date to be given away to our friends and family back then. It was one proud moment of mine to have my first DIY (do-it-yourself) for our wedding. Thanks to Mandy for sharing this knowledge while we are both W@Wies back then.

Two days ago my sister asked me if I can create a Save the Date for their upcoming wedding. Compared to my STD, she wanted me to use two of their prenup photos last March and just put their names and wordings on the photo. I thought it will be a breeze but I was challenged by her OC-iness. After how may drafts, I was able to come up with these three:

STD #2
Save the Date #1
STD #1
Save the Date #2
STD #1
Save the Date #3
She wanted the STD #1 to be given out to friends but she finds the words congested on the available space on the right so she opted for  STD #3 which surprise me as she specifically wanted for all the letters to be colored white. On the other hand, I'm relieved that she was able to choose! Sigh of relief!

Four Sisters and a Wedding

This post is sort of a movie review mash up with personal family stories in between...

Last July 7, I forgot to bring a tissue when I watch this movie together with my fellow N@Wies thus I end up getting my face dirty and I have to resolve in using my hands to wipe the tears then wipe my hands in my pants. Good thing that movie houses/cinemas are dark and that hubby is not with me.I know it's one of those eeew moments.

Four sisters and a wedding is a hit among us probably because it shows the relationship between each Filipino family member and how we are as a family. It hit the mark big time! We have a close knit relationship to the point that we tend to look out for each other thus we end up meddling each other's personal lives.

Most of the time, the pressure is on the eldest. High expectations are set by the parents thus failure is not an option. This is portrayed by Toni Gonzaga and just like her character I feel the pressure of my parents to work hard even to the extent that they want me to work abroad so I can help in providing for our family. If I didn't marry at age 27 I'll probably working in Singapore or Dubai or Kuala Lumpur and probably I won't have the desire to marry =P

Second to the eldest normally comes in second and felt that they are not that important versus the eldest thus they are the ones who are tough, strong-willed, who speak out their minds and who unintentionally become tactless. This is Bea Alonzo's character which is not far from my sister's personality. Don't get me wrong, I love my sister. She's very generous and she have traits that are quite opposite from mine. If I'm lacking in the "strong attitude" area, that's where she fits in. And she's the one who made my parent's dream in owning a house turned into a realty with me on a supporting role. Wouldn't trade her for any sisters in the world!

I don't know if it's only in Filipino family but the third of middle child is tagged as the black sheep. Either the eldest is being favored or the youngest by each parent thus the middle felt neglected or that everything he/she does have a negative connotation. This is portrayed by Angel Locsin who is an independent and free-spirited individual. On our family's case, my brother happens to be an easy-go-lucky guy who doesn't care much about what's happening in our home. He is like a boarder who goes in and out of the house as he pleased =P
But there are instances where his thoughtfulness and sweetness kicks in and that was when our youngest was hit by dengue fever in 2009 (or 2010) and he have to gave her a piggy back ride going out of the house to the main road so they can see a doctor as my youngest sister is too weak to stand much more to walk on her own.

The fourth child are the ones that are shy or quiet. In the movie it's portrayed by Shaina Magdayao who dotingly looks after her mother since her eldest sisters are not living with them. She's the quiet type who doesn't take sides when there's an issue brewing among her siblings. In our family, our fourth is a male and he happens to be in college. He is the most quiet among us and prefers to be left alone in his room. Doesn't want his stuff to be touched by anyone except if you ask permission from him first. He kept most of his thoughts to himself and he is very considerate when it comes to money matters.

The youngest on the movie happens to be the only male in Salazar household. Enchong Dee was an answered prayer uttered by his sisters when they were kids. He is the affectionate, typical boy-next-door type and who decided to get married ahead. Our youngest is definitely far from marrying since she's in high school at the moment but she's the most "malambing" even to the point that it's becoming so cheesy. She's not shy to hug or kiss my parents even if my other siblings are there to witness it. She's also the "spoiled brat" in our family because my parents especially my mother dote on her too much probably because of her being malambing.

What's my take on this movie? It definitely hit the spot to reach out to the Filipino families. I'm sure everyone can relate to the Salazar family where every member have issues, different personalities, pent up emotions towards one another, got sidetracked by work, career, lovelife, material things, etc that make us grew apart. Each actors and actresses portrayed their characters very well. Though this is a family-oriented film,  it has  comedy and love story. But wait, the word action is missing. Hmmm, let's say there's a tiny bit of action during a confrontational scene of Angel Locsin with a girl that is flirting with her bf. I read somewhere that Toni admitted and even asked their director on not having to take too much drama scene as she is more comfortable punching comedy lines. I'd say she's right about that. She portrays the eldest among the siblings and yet she is the funniest among the sisters. Carmi Martin was so amazing in her portrayal as a mother of Enchong Dee's bride to the point that even Coney Reyes was all praises on her.

What I always like in Star Cinema is they make films that is worthwhile to watch and that there are values to be learned. It's like having a self-check or an awakening which made you realize the importance of living is not only for one's self. The bottomline of the movie is family is family or blood is thicker than water as they say so don't let petty issues tear your family apart. After all, they are the ones who will stick by your side through ups and downs. Every problems can be worked out through communication and I'm saying it should be a proper communication and not a screaming competition. If there's any misunderstanding between a family, it is best to say it outright and also learn to be humble and apologize for your mistakes. I know that it takes seconds to say harsh things but why is it so hard for some to apologize granting that all of us have education and that right conduct is taught in school.

More importantly, let's not left out the word RESPECT. I know there's a saying that respect is earned and not given but this quote only applies to people who are your friends, acquaintances, colleagues, etc. This simple word should be present first hand to our very own home and practiced within the family. Let me end this blog post with this quote that I chance upon in Google...

"No family is perfect...We argue, We fight. We even stop talking to each other at times. but in the end. Family is Family...The love will always be there."

I'm still over the moon for the birthday greetings I received via Facebook and SMS from my family, friends, previous classmates and colleagues. I was overwhelmed and grateful that they remember my special day.

And I still can't get over the messages that my better half sent me. First, he sent it via private message in FB:
Love PM
This really made me smile and laugh
Translation in English: "Happy Birthday! In a few days will be celebrating our 10 years of being together. It's unfair that you don't get (look) old while me can pass up as your father. I wish that you will have white/grey hair so we will be on the same boat hahaha. Take Care always. I love you.

Next he put another message on my FB wall:
love bday
This made me swoon

There are times that my husband will surprise me and I get caught off guard. This is one of those rare moments. To my dear hubby who patiently puts up with all my quirks and outbursts, I love you so dearly and I'm looking forward to celebrate more Birthdays, Anniversaries and Christmases with you.

DFA Office in Alabang is Now Open

Now all Southerners can breathe a huge sigh of relief as we don't need to make an extra effort applying and renewing passports in Pasay City.

Now it will only take for us 20-30 minutes ride for us to reach DFA unlike before. I haven't check out the place yet as I won't be needing any renewal for my passport but not on the case of my husband as his passport will expire on February next year. So most likely will be trotting in DFA South office come December or January. I do hope that the process in applying/renewing passports will be smooth sailing.

Kudos to the Philippine Team for bagging the silver medal in the recently concluded 27th FIBA Asia Championship!
Gilas Filipinas

Although most of the Filipinos would have wanted for them to win the gold medal, the desire to play a sport that is known for the big and tall guys is enough reason for us to be proud of the team for proving that we can be competitive albeit the lacking of height. All it takes is faith, guts and strong will that we can do it.

I'd be honest that I didn't start watching their FIBA games. I got interested when it's their turn to face the South Korea team and that's the first and last that I was able to watch the Philippine team compete. I know that it's late on my part to appreciate the FIBA games but nonetheless I was mighty proud watching them on our television together with my whole family. Too bad I missed the championship game while I was out with my friends.

Having won the 2nd place in FIBA, they are now qualified to compete in FIBA World Cup in Spain! Woohoo! It's definitely a whole new level of basketball and definitely not to be miss. Pau Gasol was kind and gracious to congratulate the Philippine team and welcome them for next year:

So excited! Now, we're back in the game!

What's Forever For?

The past few weeks, I've been hearing a lot of couples battling it out in court for the custody of their children and their rights as an individual. Did marriage did this to them? Or the essence of  a marriage seems to slip away as years goes by. Pardon me for being sentimental today, I just couldn't help but wonder what happen....

I've been looking at people and how they change with the times
And lately all I've been seeing are people
Throwing love away and losing their minds

Raymart Santiago and Claudine Barretto
Who will forget this couple? They've proven that they will stand by each other no matter what happens when they were involved in a brawl with a known broadcaster/reporter in an airport terminal. I've seen their wedding and how much in love they were during that day. But Raymart left their love nest and never returned for how many months now. No third party involved in their trial separation(?) except the news about a bank account that was emptied and the Barretto's kept secret of Claudine's depression which was exposed when older sister Gretchen blurted it out in social media. Then there's a photo of Clauding in Instagram with a  bruise on her left cheek mounting to more speculations. The couple celebrated their birthday separately last July that puzzles the people more on what's going on with their relationship. Then out of the blue, Claudine filed for a Temporary Protection Order against Raymart and in return Raymart files for Habeas Corpus to get the custody of the children.

Maybe it's me who's gone crazy, Cause I can't understand why
All these lovers keep hurting each other,
When good love is so hard to come by

Cesar Montano and Sunshine Cruz
Age and having kids are not hindrances to marry one of the most sexiest woman in local entertainment. Cesar Montano is one lucky man having Sunshine Cruz as a wife when she was only 23 years old. I've also seen their wedding in the garden of Coconut Palace with Manila Bay serving as a backdrop. Their Christian wedding was breathtaking and it was serene. When I was watching it, I said to myself that perhaps Cesar will be a one-woman man but old habits die hard I suppose. For 13 years that they've been together, Cesar is always linked to various women and the last rumor with Krista Miller was the final straw for Shine. Sunshine left Cesar last January of this year and she started being active again in showbiz to provide for her children. Recently, Cesar fetch their children from school and promised her estranged wife that they will return them to her. Up to now the children are still with their father and it seems he has no intentions of returning them causing Sunshine to file a case against her husband to fight for the custody of her children and her right as a woman. A case of violence against women and children was filed the other day by Sunshine in Quezon City Prosecutor's office. Yesterday the couple came face to face with each other in court. Shine got her children back but it seems that Cesar won't back down without putting up a fight.

I see love hungry people tryin' their best to survive,
When in their hands is a dying romance,
If they're not even tryin' to keep it alive

Sen. Koko Pimentel and Jewel May Lobaton
Honestly I'm not much into politicians private lives thus I am clueless on who Sen. Koko Pimentel wife is until the news came out that they decided to separated last 2011. There are speculations that the reason why the couple split was because Sen. Pimentel is abusing her wife physically to which Jewel denied the rumors. My father have his own hypothesis and that is the senator could be gay and it was discovered by the wife (the plot seems familiar right? My father can be over dramatic sometimes). Recently it was found out the real reason why they called it quits. Former beauty queen Jewel Lobaton (wife of the senator) has accused his estranged husband of psychological and emotional abuse. She is set to file  a case against Pimentel for violating Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence against Women and their Children Act. The senator's only reaction, ""This is a free country. She can file any case in court. But out of respect for my family and our children, I will only answer all accusations once the case is filed in the proper venue," he said. (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/08/12/13/estranged-wife-accuses-koko-pimentel-abuse)

So what's the glory in living?
Doesn't anybody ever stay together anymore?
And if love never lasts forever, tell me what's Forever For?

Cheap Decorative Tapes

Crafts and DIYs (Do-It-Yourself) are so popular these days especially if your throwing a party or having an event and you need to cut down the cost as much as you can. I have my fair share of DIY when I was preparing my wedding back in 2006 and that was creating my Save the Date magnets. In a mommy yahoogroup where I'm a member, one mommy shared her find in Expressions which is the decorative tapes that are so huge now. Blame it on Washi tapes that started it all. A normal washi tape costs Php75-100 depending on the length and design. To be honest I find it quite pricey thus some individuals looked for a cheaper alternative and they found it in Expressions, a school and office supplies store.

Arm with this shared discovery, I went to check out the nearest Expressions branch in our area. Good thing it wouldn't take me an hour to commute going to Dasmarinas Cavite, thank you for the orange multicabs found in SM Molino Hypermarket terminal.

First stop is Expressions branch in Waltermart Dasmarinas. Upon entrance you will see on your left the Jollibee/Greenwich fast food then right next to it is the Expressions. The branch is simply humble and my impression is that they don't stock much in their inventory.  I felt that I'm one of the last people to know about these tapes that I ended up getting only the ff:
DSC03420a
I only scored 4 tapes (see the tapes with * mark)
Since I'm already in the area, I decided to go to another Expressions branch located in SM Dasmarinas which can be found in the lower ground floor. Sometimes I think impulsively and this is not an exception. I'm itching to try out these tapes to a plastic container that's been sitting in our room for quite some time now. I know that it needs a makeover and the tapes will do the trick.

I was not disappointed since I found the remaining tapes on the above picture (disregard the tapes with * mark and those are the tapes that I got in Expressions Dasmarinas).
decorative tapes which cost Php 19.75
Decorative Tapes cost Php 19.75 each
fabric tapes that cost Ph 29.95
Fabric Tapes cost Php 29.95 each
Here's the container that badly needs an over haul (just kidding, I'm exagerating). It's actually good as it is but the prints on the container itself is irritating to my eyesight.

an empty plastic container that is perfect for storing things
DSC03426
I want to cover the prints on this container so I chose the color red tape
fully covered
Tada! It looks nicer, doesn't it?
pretty cover :)
I'm not satisfied with the way the cover turned out so I added another tape to cover the slightly visible print.
Now this is much better :)

DSC03429
Who would've thought that putting tapes can be so addicting? Hahahaha!
DSC03430
The finish look of the plastic container after my make-over. The design of the tapes remind me of Christmas.
I bet you're wondering how much tape I consumed after covering the whole plastic container. You will be surprised to know that it didn't even reached one whole roll. Probably half of the roll was used. What's more, the tape that I used has a plastic finish thus I don't need to worry about water spilling all over it. I'm sure that the designs on the tape or the whole tape itself will still be intact.

Stay tuned for more craft/DIYs ideas from these wonderful and cheap tapes. Also, I found the same tapes on my trip to Divisoria a few weeks back. I'll create a separate entry about it since I found a lot of other stuff that is worth paying a visit.

Couples Should Go On Vacation Instead of Buying Stuff

Someone from Facebook shared this link and I thought to myself, "Yes! I have to show this to my husband to enlighten him!". Yeah, my better half is not a big fan of trips or travels. It's a miracle that I was able to tag him in Boracay and Coron, Palawan but when it comes to traveling out of the country I always end up being alone. So maybe these reasons will change his mind and hopefully we can travel next year to Singapore/Legoland Malaysia.

1. People who collect experiences are happier than people who collect things.
2. You can see the world.
3. You can visit family or friends.
4. Travel is educational.
5. It can be cheaper.
6. It puts you in touch with nature.

6. It puts you in touch with nature.

7. You can take time away from the kids.
8. Or you can bond with the kids!
9. You often do things on vacation you wouldn’t otherwise.
10. Learning about other cultures and ways of life helps you appreciate your own life.
11. Sleeping in a hotel makes you happy to come home to your own bed.
12. Your relationship grows on vacation in a way that it can’t at home.

12. Your relationship grows on vacation in a way that it can’t at home.

13. You’re making a lasting memory.
14. Your home will remain less cluttered.
15. It’s fun!

For the explanation of every reasons stated above, you can check out this article from babble where I got it from. As for me, life is short to waste it in front of a laptop where you can do something far better and fun. I definitely want to make the most out of my life and I want my husband to do the same.

While I was watching the performance of Justin Timberlake in the recently concluded MTV Video Music awards, I feel like a teenager all over again. This dude is sexy, classy and hot! Lucky Jessica Biel to have him as her husband. Too bad for you Britney Spears, you let him slipped away. Are you crazy?! Sigh! Watched the video below and I'm sure you will agree with me that he deserved the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award (it's a lifetime achievement award) for his contribution to MTV culture.

His proven that he is a good friend and a band mate as he acknowledge that half of the moon awards that he got were during the N Sync days. He even decided to reunite their group as they performed in the VMA awards to show his gratitude to them. Taylor Swift with Selena Gomez and company surely enjoys this performance as the camera keeps on zooming on them as they danced and sing to Justin's songs. Don't forget that Lady Gaga with her monsters where on the same boat with Taylor. This group surely knows how to have a good time in an awards night while Rihanna was so composed on her seat.

A composer, singer, performer and an actor - wow! He is one versatile fine man. Congratulations on the award Sexyback!

Divisoria is a haven for shoppers and entrepreneurs who are looking for bargained goods. A few years back my sister and her friend used to buy Class A bags in this place which they sell to their friends and colleagues. The tagline of Shoemart's We've got it all for you fits this place perfectly.

I've been to Divi (short term for Divisoria) a few times and to be honest I'm not that familiar with the area at all. Moreover I don't have the courage to go there by myself as I'm scared to be lost or worst to be a victim of holdapers or snatchers. The place is pretty crowded on weekends especially when it's nearing Christmas season. That's why I'm ecstatic to discover this app which is available for iOS and will be launch in September 6, 2013.

Behold! The Divisoria Guide App
With this app going around Divisoria will be a breeze! You will find what you're looking for in an instant. Saves you a lot of time, money and effort. I don't need to worry in getting lost as they have a map of the whole place. I super like!

Divisoria Guide takes your shopping experience in Divisoria in a whole new level. Below are the screenshots of the app:
Finding the stalls for different merchandise will be hassle-free
Business owners will be able to score some good deals for their raw materials/products
I love the maps!
Be street smart with this app
No worries in getting lost
Learn everything you need to know in putting up your first business with this app:
I super like this info!
Pretty cool huh? This app will surely be a hit for everyone with iOS gadgets that is. So to the creator(s), please make it available soon in Android.

Mark your calendars! The launching date for this app is on September 6, 2013.

It's September and it's been 7 months that were seeking an infertility OB to help us conceive. After months of follicle monitoring and having a semen analysis done, my OB decided for me to undergo hysteroscopy procedure. My last post on our TTC journey was Dra. Aguilar wants me to get an approval from Medicard about the procedure.

So last July 24th or was it 26th that I went to Cardinal Santos Medical Center and made a beeline to the Medicard coordinator. On the main entrance you will see some cubicles on your right with seats provided for outpatients waiting for the approval of their respective HMOs. Armed with the medical certificate from my OB I went to the Medicard table and explained my situation. Turns out that I need to have an ultrasound printout and admittance form filled up by my OB before they can accommodate my request for approval.

Dra. Aguilar's office schedule in Cardinal Santos is MWF 10am-12nn. It's quarter to 12 so I decided to pay her a visit to discuss the things I need to acquire before having the hysteroscopy procedure. In her office I met Lizette, her secretary. Unfortunately my OB is not in her office and went out since they only have 3 patients during that day. So I relayed to Lizette my situation including the approval needed for Medicard. She sent a SMS to my OB and we waited for her reply. Turns out that since I'm her patient in Friendly Care, she doesn’t have the records on her laptop at her Cardinal Santos' office. I will need to see her on her clinic schedule in Friendly Care. Oh well, at least I tried resolving the issue right there and then.

August 1st, I went to Friendly Care so I can discuss with Dra. Aguilar my concerns and the documents needed by Medicard. For the print copy of my ultrasound, she referred me to a sonologist within Friendly Care; I had a TVS and have to pay Php 800 since Medicard didn't approve the request of the nurse to shoulder the ultrasound. After having the printout copy Dra. Aguilar gave me a request slip to have a urinalysis, CBC and ECG done. She wanted to make sure that I'm not pregnant and everything is okay with my vital stats before the hysteroscopy.

August 17, I went to Medicard clinic in Festival mall for the Urinalysis, ECG and CBC. I presented the request slip signed by my OB however the diagnosis or the reason for that procedure is not stated so the nurse/staff in Medicard have to ask me some questions on what is the cause for the request slip. I have to wait for Medicard's call regarding my situation and after 5-10 minutes, the staff told me that the lab tests will not be shoulder by Medicard since the root cause is my endometrial polyp. According to Medicard, polyp is a pre-existing condition thus for the first year of my membership it is not covered. Anything that has got to do with polyp, procedures or lab tests will not be covered and I have to wait for next year (2nd year of my membership). Bummer! I know that this is the sign that my request for hysteroscopy through Medicard will not be approve.

I decided to go ahead with the lab tests despite of having to pay for it. For the three lab tests, I spent around Php 600+. The prices are discounted since I'm a Medicard member. After a week I went back to get my results. Everything is normal but it seems that I won't be using the result of my lab tests. As if by a cue, my OB sent me a SMS which is unusual for her to do. She's wants to know if I will proceed with my hysteroscopy as she has another patient waiting to be schedule for the same procedure. I replied to her saying that I will give up my slot for hysteroscopy and she can give it to her other patient as Medicard won't approve our request due to the pre-existing limitations for the first year of HMO membership. So now I'm stuck and trying to figure out other options. I was thinking of consulting another OB for second opinion or what will be their take on my situation.

Last Sunday my brother and I went to visit The District Cavite just to buy J.Co Donuts. Since it's weekend I expected that the queue on their cashier will be long. So while we are waiting for our turn, I asked my brother to fall in line while I looked for a BPI ATM machine where I can withdraw some money.

I noticed on the ground floor of Promenade that there's an exhibit where Cavite local products are showcase. I decided to take a look and see what products are being sold.

For those of you Southerners especially Cavitenos who have money to spare, go to The District Cavite and sample the locally products that our beloved province has to offer. The exhibit is till Sunday only (September 8).

Hello everyone! It's a rainy morning here in my place but somehow I can see the King Sun shyly peeking behind the clouds. Though it's a little gloomy and the fact that is Monday (which is not my favorite day when I was working in the corporate world), let me share this talk by Fitz Villafuerte which I attended last year (October 2012) during the Belle de Jour Fair. He owns a blog site titled Ready to be Rich which is his way of paying forward to help people especially Filipinos in handling their finances and attaining financial freedom.

So let this blog entry take your Monday blues away and be inspired to dream BIG.

Fitz Villafuerte's Flex Your Money Muscle Talk
Fitz Villafurte in the flesh
Who is Fitz Villafuerte?
Health is Wealth indeed!
Don't misunderstand the caption on the above photo but when it comes to your well-being it's indeed your wealth if you are healthy. Being healthy means you're capable to be productive and can accomplish things whereas if you're always sick your family, your job and sadly your savings are affected. So when you see, wealthy is healthy it simply means having your own fund or savings for health emergencies. Having money for your health means less worry for you and your loved ones.

Every Filipinos whether you're poor, middle class or super rich should practice this habit.
I remember when we were in grade school, my mother will accompany me and my sister to a local bank to open our savings account. I had no idea what it's all about; I simply follow whatever my mother instructed us to do. If my memory serves me right, it was Banco Filipino when we first had our bank account. Apart from the back account, my sister and I owned a piggy bank. We normally put coins ranging from 25 cents to a one peso coin. Sadly we didn't manage to continue saving up. Just like a normal kid, if we want to buy candies or cheap toys we always find ways to get the coins from our piggy bank. Now I realized that a little money each day can go a long way if you sum it up.

I bet everyone can relate to this
We had our fair share of financial disaster due to a medical emergency. My father was hospitalized February of last year for a suspected stroke. He was confined in ICU for a week then stayed in a ward for another week or two. My mother tried every possible way that she can to cut down the hospital bills but sadly we still need to shell out money which we didn't physically have. My sister was working abroad so she shared some of her savings and sends it over to me to help with the expenses. My cousin who is planning to buy the land inherited by my father in the province gave his payment early to my father. I on the other hand, processed the Philhealth documents of my father. He is a Philhealth member but non-active so he cannot avail the benefits of a member. To speed up the assistance coming from Philhealth, we have to deactivate his membership and registered him as my sister's beneficiaries. It was a stressful and nerve racking event for the whole family that I don't want to experience again.

I can't help but roll my eyes about inflation
Wouldn't you agree that nowadays everything is pricier compared to five or ten years ago? Before you can buy so much of items for a PHP 1,000 but now you will be surprised to see a few items in your shopping basket or cart that is surprisingly worth PHP 1,000. I always frowned whenever I do our groceries. I can relate too well. I wish that whenever there is price hike, the salaries also increase but that is just a dream.

This is so true! Nowadays, education is nothing if you don't have an ability to use that education wisely.
I always tell my brother who's currently in college that in the past faced and competitive environment that we have now, education is not enough to succeed. You need to use your brain and be creative on how you can achieve your dreams. Being strong-willed is also important and as the saying goes, Experience is the best teacher. If you can't afford to learn some technical stuff, there are ways to learn them on your own. You just have to be patient and diligent. Use the resources available and it's important that you get to learn new things in life. In that way, you will survive the trying times that is a part of life.

I like this quote very much!
From my understanding of the above quote it simply means cutting down your expenses and saving it up for the future. Stop spending buying coffees in Starbucks, or watching movies, or travelling more than once a year. I know some people will say that it's better to experience things while you're young but what about your future? Would you want to rely on your children to take care of you until you die? I'm simply saying that though our children have an obligation to look after us, that doesn't mean that their lives should revolve around us. It will be nice if we have a savings of our own (retirement plan/money) so by the time we are old, we won't be much of a burden to our children. If you think about it, your children will have a family of their own and they will prioritize their family over us (that's the truth). You're lucky if you have a child who will never forget and leave your side but that's not the case for everyone. So better to sacrifice some luxuries in life today then live abundantly in the future. Don't forget, inflation is constant just like change.

I'm not saying that we jump immediately in investing our hard earned money. It pays to read and learn about finances. I myself haven't made any investment lie mutual funds or stocks though I've been wanting to do it since two years ago but I want to make sure that my finances are stable (I want to be credit free and have an emergency fund). At the moment, I just signed up for a health insurance + life insurance plan. I needed a health insurance since I don't have any. Working as an offshore consultant has ups and downs. One of the downside is they don't provide you a HMO so you have to get one for yourself.

Learn how to make your money work for you, be financially educated.

P.S. Sorry for the grainy pictures as I'm using my Blackberry Curve in taking the photos.

The Philippines - 2013 CHAMPION Pyronale Fireworks Competition

I can't help but be proud that the Philippines (represented by Dragon Fireworks) won the 2013 Pyronale Fireworks World Championships! The country got 2 Awards: the Audience Choice Award and the Gold Trophy as the 2013 Grand Champion. The competition was held in Berlin Germany.

Dragon Fireworks is known as one of the best in the country when it comes to fireworks or should I say pyrotechnics. They are the go-to supplier for couples who wants a fireworks display on their reception. Wow! They've come a long way from being a mere supplier to an international sensation. Kudos to you guys!

A little sharing about myself. I have a Pyrotechnophobia. Ever since I was a little girl, the eve of New Year is not my favorite holiday as I dreaded hearing all the noise coming from firecrackers and fireworks. It even came to a point that I'll be hiding in a closet or under my bed.

Gradually I was able to minimize my reaction towards the fireworks. Either I'll be plugging an earphone to shutdown the noise or I'll play loud music in my room. If you're going to ask me if I'm brave enough to go outside during the eve of New Year, well the answer is a big NO. I'm still terrified seeing the fireworks/firecrackers in action within a few distances from me. My close friends know this piece of secret about me that's why they understand immediately if I decline to any events if it falls down on December 30th till January 1st.

But that phobia didn't stop me from watching this video. I actually enjoyed it. Now I'm thinking of how it feels to watch it live, I should put this in my bucket list. They say that to overcome your fear, you have to face it head on and that's what I'm going to do. I'll start watching the Pyro Musical Competition live.

For now, please do enjoy watching this video. The pyrotechnics are simply amazing especially the last part! Congratulations to the Philippine Team! You made us all proud!

My Zalora Experience

Last July I was checking Zalora, an online shopping website that is so popular for carrying different brand items in Asia. I saw an ad about discounts offered for men and I was hoping I can find something for my husband for our Bohol trip in November.

I was lucky to found this on sale:
Board shorts that cost Php 163.00 each from Collective.com
It was definitely a good buy but I decided to just put these items on my cart and look for other board shorts in Zalora if there's far cheaper than the ones I found. I didn't find anything so I looked in Ebay. Still nothing cheaper like a Php 100 worth of a board short. I give up and decided to call it a day.

I got an email from Zalora the following day with this message:

Wow! This site really knows how to convince it's buyers for grabbing their items. This chance is too good to pass up so I hurriedly checkout my items and use the coupon code they've provided on my email. By the way I used Paypal in making my purchase. My total bill...

Total bill including shipping fee Php 539.32. Hurray!
I decided to ship the items that I ordered on my friend's address since it's cheaper if it's a Metro Manila address (Php 100 fee) versus provincial address which is where I am now. I informed my friend to wait for a package from Zalora as I have used her home address. The following day, I received a BBM message from my friend telling me that the package arrived! Wow!

My friend and I decided to meet so I can get the package from her. She's such a sweet friend for carrying the box. I owe her so many thanks!

Gearing up for Christmas

They say that in the Philippines, we celebrate Christmas longer than any other countries. As soon as September month comes in, it’s the cue for everyone to start prepping for the Yuletide Season! Do you know that Christmas is my favorite event followed by my birthday? I just love the colorful lights, decors, Christmas songs & carols and most especially the people are in good spirits during this time of the year.

So let me tell you a few things you need to prep to get in the Christmas mood right now!

1.Start making your shopping list
Don’t leave it till December to think about what to get who! You don’t want to be buying things on impulse, then trying to figure out later on who would be the best person to gift it to. Not that it wouldn't work, but think about it this way: At the moment when you receive a present, wouldn't it be nice to know that your friend had you specifically in mind when he bought that gift? Also, when you already have an idea of what you want to get, you have 4 months to get the best deals around! I’m sure everyone would like that idea of scoring some good deals as Christmas gifts. My sister who is based in Kuala Lumpur told me that she didn't see any Bath and Body Works shops/boutiques in KL. I think that’s my cue to give her one!

2.Visit a tiangge/bazaar/flea markets or Divisoria
As September rolls in, so do the Christmas bazaars! Not only they are the go to place when you want to get items in bulk for the whole office, you may also want to visit a tiangge to soak in the festive season! You can also find a whole multitude of Christmas ornaments to get your house in the mood for Christmas! Places such St. Francis Square , 168 Mall and Greenhills offers bargained items which will definitely put a smile on your face. As a matter of fact, I've made three trips to Divisoria (168 Mall) since August and some shops are already selling Christmas items and decors. If the crowds are not for you, why not try online bazaars such as Zalora? Beat the Christmas rush and have stress free gift giving this year! I'm sure you will be delighted to see the products and discounts they're offering. As a matter of fact they have items that are discounted up to 70% which can be great Christmas gifts for you peers and loved ones. I'm happy to announce that some Bath and Body Works items are on sale as we speak.

3. Decorate!

No Christmas season is complete without decorations! After your trip to the bazaar, make sure you have plenty of Christmas decorations to decorate your home. That will definitely set the ambiance of your home to a festive and positive vibe for December. If your getting low on funds, how about give a chance on DIY (do-it-yourself) Christmas decors. There's a wide selection of websites that can serves us your reference. Moreover, this is a perfect bonding activity with your friends and family.

I’m totally excited for Christmas! Are you?
